Adventure Team FOG
(Fat Old Guys)
Is a group of amateur radio enthusiasts from Western North Carolina that got together to enjoy the love of the outdoors with a passion for ham radio operations. They are active year-round. Making them one of the most active teams in America; averaging over 100 summits a year.
Team FOG (Fat Old Guys) uses multiple mods of communication. From the historical CW (morse code), and SSB (voice), as well as the latest digital modes. They operate using QRP (low power) HF radios with either a vertical or wire antenna; allowing them to make contact all over the world. They also us handheld radios (walkie talkies) for shorter range, more local contacts.
Amateur Radio remains the back-up communications system, in the unlikely event of a national emergency.
Testing their skills at various locations like this, helps to ensure that system is ready.

SOTA
SOTA (Summits On The Air) is a program for radio amateurs, “hams” that encourages portable operations, as well as base stations.
SOTA involves Activators, those that hike to the summit and broadcast, and Chasers those that try to contact them. SOTA is active in over 118 countries with more than 100,000 designated mountain tops, and more than 10,000 operators.
SOTA is designed for everyone from casual hikers to hard core mountaineers as well as hams operating from their homes. To make things more interesting there is an award system for both activators and chasers. For activators it is the coveted Mountain Goat; and for chasers it is the highly respected Shack Sloth. Each one requiring 1,000 points, taking on average 3 years to achieve.
Interest in SOTA continues to grow with activators climbing summits from the Alps to the Appalachians and Chasers making contacts with their mountain climbing friends.
POTA
POTA (Parks On The Air) is a program for radio amateurs, “hams” that encourages portable operations, as well as base stations.
POTA is based on the National Parks on the Air event that took place in 2016. After that event ended, a group of hams wanted to continue and even expand that idea.
POTA has since gone global, with thousands of participants that enjoy activating and/or chasing the parks.
Many national / federal and state / provincial, parks are eligible; with more being added.
POTA has several awards for both activators and chasers.
POTA is designed to make participation possible for everyone. All an activator has to do is go to a park and set-up. An activator can even operate from with-in their vehicle.
The activator and all equipment must be located completely within the boundaries of the park or within 100 feet of a trail.
Interest in POTA continues to grow with activators and Chasers making contacts with each other.

The primary purposes of the Adventure Team F.O.G. club is to enjoy the fellowship and common interests of the members and to promote, educate, and lead interested Amateur Radio operators in furthering an interest in outdoor radio activities. Our focus is primarily in the areas of summits on the air (SOTA) and parks on the air (POTA). The club's efforts include leading SOTA and POTA activations for new activators, giving process demonstrations at several local summits and promoting our mission with a booth at Hamfest.
Membership is open to any licensed amateur radio operator.
